Increasingly my clients are looking beyond the financial success they have achieved
and towards their legacy. At the same time, they want the value and effectiveness
that they demand in other parts of their lives. The result is Strategic Philanthropy.
Over the years, my legal practice has become very successful and I have looked to find a way to help and try and use the fruits of this
success to try and make the world a better place. After struggling to find an effective vehicle for my philanthropy, I discovered
Room to
Read and have become involved as a fundraiser. The founder John Wood, left a high level job at Microsoft to create an organization
dedicated to bringing literary to those children who would never have had an opportunity to learn to read.

Noah and David Lesperance
Along with raising money for Room to Read, I decided to give myself the present of building a school or library every year. In addition, I have decided to use this annual donation as a way to teach my own son about the world and his responsibilities to it. The result is "Noah and David's World Tour." The first installment of this tour happened in April 2008, when we visited Vietnam to attend the dedication of a preschool we funded and a middle school computer lab funded by friends.
[To watch a video of the Vietnam dedication day, click here.] In April 2009, my son and I will be going to South Africa to attend the dedication of one of the three libraries we funded in that country. I have also discovered a great deal of interest from my clients in joining on this annual adventure as a method of educating their own children.
In my practice, I get a significant number of inquires. As I truly believe that in order to properly advise clients, it is necessary to fully understand their situation, concerns and goals, I insist on a telephone or personal consultation which is under the full protection of solicitor-client privilege. In the past, I required a consultation fee, but in an effort to bring an element of Strategic Philanthropy to my practice, I have instituted a policy of requiring individuals requesting consultations to make a $2500 US donation to Room to Read. This donation is tax deductible in the U.S., U.K., Canada and other countries
[see list here], and will fund a 10 year scholarship for a young girl in the developing world. For more information I would encourage you to visit
